Chapter 9

Yeqon thumped the table with his fist and raised a cup.

“Kea! Welcome to the shithole we call home.” His eyes were glassy, his smile loose as he toasted Kea and Kira. Mead drained, his cup was immediately replenished and he drank some more.

Yeqon belched, lurched to the left and pulled at the waist of his current human flame. She giggled, fell eagerly into him. She twirled her fingers through his chest hair, leaned in to nibble his ear. The woman fit snug on his lap; her long black hair curtained her face as she nuzzled him.

Yeqon tipped his head to the right, affording more skin for her mouth, smiling at Kea and Kira; it was lust, not shame that bloomed across his skin.

Kea lowered her drink, joy faded as her smile waned. She stared expressionless at him. Kira, looked away, sipping her own drink.

What are you doing, Yeqon. It’s hands off the humans. Kea spoke in his mind.

Yeqon snorted, pushed the human girl away, she stumbled before finding her feet, scowling at Yeqon and swearing in her local dialect.

“More mead.” He thrust his cup into her hand. She rolled her eyes and slumped away to tend his request, her protestations louder.

I do nothing I’m not allowed to, Kea. Merely tending her health, ensuring she is safe, giving her purpose in this otherwise purposeless world. Yeqon responded; the corner of his mouth tugged into a half smile.

No fraternising, no breeding with the humans, no utilising them for carnal pleasure, don’t you recall? And… no servitude! Kea slipped Kira’s hand into her own, drew her towards a table. They sat down opposite Yeqon upon a bank of stone draped in linens. Immediately waited upon by humans laden with platters of fruits and nuts, cured beets and maize cakes, they both looked uncomfortable. Kea waved them away.

“I can tend myself, thank you,” Kea said. The humans halted, looked at each other, peered over to Yeqon, discomfort widening their eyes. Yeqon nodded at them, they lowered the platters, left jugs for Kea and Kira to pour themselves. The humans bickered between themselves, rolled their hands over and over, stood awkwardly behind Kea and Kira, seemingly unsure what to do with themselves.

See, you’ve upset them now. Yeqon smirked. They thrive on purpose, on rules and guidance. Can’t at all think for themselves… hence why we were sent here.

It’s more than pouring a drink, Yeqon, and you know that. It’s… it’s the mortal sex, the risk of breeding is just too high. Kea admonished him, pouring herself mead, she drank long, then slammed the cup so hard the platters rattled. Kira startled, glanced between Kea and Yeqon, not privy to their conversation. She patted Kea’s arm; her efforts didn’t dull the rosy flush of anger smattering Kea’s cheeks.

Calm down. Who is breeding with them? Pleasure can be many things Kea, as you well know. I have not sullied a single human. Yeqon’s eyes lingered upon Kea’s lips, slid to her chest, his mouth parted, a groan rumbled in his throat.
